Make Up Your Mind To Be Happy

I really enjoy the singer/songwriter, Donovan. His song, Life is a Merry-Go-Round, contains the brilliant words used for the title to this entry. “Make up your mind to be happy.” Do you consistently accomplish this one simple thing? Can you make up your mind to be happy?

For some of you as you read my words, doubts and questions immediately arise. “But you just don’t understand,” you want to say to me. “How can I ever be happy when my spouse is so difficult.” Or maybe, “You’d be miserable, too, if you had my lousy job.” Or just fill in whatever gripe is at the top of your current list.

Well, I’ve got a real shocker for you. Some situations and certain people are never going change. Admittedly, there are some things that you perceive as “bad” that can be changed and should be changed. But that is another post for another day. Today I’m discussing you. How you feel on the inside and how you PERCEIVE something as “good” or “bad.”

One of my favorite quotes is from an ancient Greek philosopher named, Epictetus. This quote appears prominently in the flagship product of the Viral Happiness Expansion Initiative, 7 Days Away From Powerfully Positive Living. Please read the quote below.

"When anything external distresses us, it is not the event which causes us pain; rather, it is our response to it, and this we have the power to revoke at any given moment.”

Read those words again, slowly and thoughtfully. Consider the power given to you by the truth in this quote. Nothing can distress us unless we allow it to distress us. Nothing. Any event (or person or situation) that we view as painful doesn’t bring us the pain. We bring the pain upon ourselves through our own response. How we view things, our perception is the key. And we are totally in control of our own perception.

So, it stands to reason that if you are unhappy or distressed about something, you can change the situation by changing your perception. Just decide, right here and now, to be happy. There’s no trick involved - no sleight of hand. All that is required is a simple decision. Just make up your mind to be happy, no matter what.
